Catherine's Traditional Yuletide Service of Carols Honours Community Volunteers
Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her customary Yuletide celebration at Westminster Abbey, with a congregation comprising members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have supported their local areas.
The large audience will hear a blend of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from performers including Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Focusing on Love and Generosity
The central message of the service, held in the glowing Westminster Abbey on Friday, is kindness and showing love to others.
In the audience are Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a brain tumour, and who set up a charity, a support fund, to aid parents with a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.
"The time, care and compassion you give, often discreetly and without words, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an extraordinary difference to the circumstances of individuals," the Princess expressed in a note prior to the concert.
Carefully Paced Reappearance
The Princess of Wales is continuing her own gradual return to public life after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, last month delivering her major oration since 2023, in which she reflected on recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".
Music and Opportunity
Those coming to the Abbey will be entertained by young musicians backed by the Future Talent charity, co-founded by the late Duchess of Kent to broaden opportunities for music lessons.
Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who plays the trumpet and is from Pembrokeshire, has been assisted by the charity, with funding assisting with instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "incredible" to be taking part in the concert.
"Musical pursuits are frequently pricey," Carys said. She is now enrolled at the prestigious music academy, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to develop their musical skills.
Generations Gathering
Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who is a euphonium player, will likewise attend the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many important people," she said.
Attending the service will be representatives of different generations.
That will encompass Saphia Turner, aged nine, honouree of a youth community award, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to generate funds for community pantries.
Festive Decor and Performances
The Abbey has been adorned with handcrafted festive wreaths, with well-known chef Mary Berry and flower expert Simon Lycett helping to make them.
The musical lineup includes Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a nautical singing ensemble, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the invitation to sing was "a dream come true."
This annual carol service will be televised and shown on a major network on Christmas Eve.
